Contraindications of Hot Yoga

When you register at Yoga Squad please let us know if you have any medical conditions so we can help prevent any injuries. We can also modify the program accordingly so you can continue to have a safe practice.

Stay hydrated

Hot yoga sessions are held in a room with temperatures up to 37 degrees. Please stay hydrated before during and after a session to prevent any dizziness or fainting.

Medication

Individuals who are using prescription drugs please seek permission from your GP before taking part in classes. When exposed to higher levels of heat there may be possible changes in the effect of the drugs. Diuretics, barbiturates and beta blockers may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanism and cause the body to over heat.

Cardiovascular conditions

Individuals with cardiovascular conditions for example hypertension, hypotension or impaired coronary circulation or those taking medication for such conditions, must seek permission from the GPS before taking part in hot yoga.

Alcohol

It is advised not to drink any alcohol before hot yoga as this can have a negative effect on the body and also increase heart rate.

Pregnancy

It is advised not to participate in hot yoga when pregnant due to elevated body temperatures. Yoga Squad recommend other classes such as Hatha or Vinyasa Flow where there has already been regular practice. The first trimester should be treated very carefully.

Chronic conditions / diseases

Associated with the Reduced Ability to Perspire Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Central Nervous System tumours, and diabetes with neuropathy are conditions that are associated with impaired sweating. Hot yoga should also be avoided by anyone predisposed to bleeding (haemophilia).

Menstruation

This can be personal choice however Yoga Squad advise Individuals to avoid inversions as blood flow is reversed unnaturally.

Joint injury

If you have a recent acute joint injury, it should not be heated for the first 48 hours or until the hot and swollen symptoms subside.

Implants

Metal pins, rods, artificial joints and any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and are not heated by this system. Nevertheless, it is advised to consulted your GP before taking part in hot yoga.

Post class advice

After participating in hot yoga classes you will often feel euphoric and energised. We advise Individuals to rehydrate.

Individuals may appear red and blotchy, this is a positive sign showing that the toxins are being flushed out of the body.

There maybe slight feelings of discomfort in the muscles. Again this is a positive and shows that your body has been awoken by the practice.
